비극은 익숙한 맛이어야 한다. 그래야 금방 익숙해지고 금방 벗어날 수 있다. 희극도 그러하다. 금방 익숙해지고 금방 벗어나야 한다. 삶이란 변화무쌍하여 익숙한 그 맛의 여운을 조용히 앉아 음미할 시간 자체를 주지 않는 것이다.
어느 누가 시작했는지는 모르겠지만 안드로이드에 사람의 얼굴을 붙이는 건 정말 질이 나쁜 발상이었다. 어떤 효용이 있는지는 모르겠지만 저 얼굴 하나 때문에 정비 효율이 극도로 떨어진다. 아군인지 적군인지 확인하려면 손수건, 그게 불안하다면 케이블 타이를 결승하는 방법으로 눈에 띄게 만들어서 구분하면 충분하다. 그걸 굳이 얼굴을 만들어서 내 부대 소속이라고 알아보게 한다는 효용을 모르겠다.
만약 그 얼굴 파츠가 찢어지거나 상처를 입는다면? 냉정해야 할 전장에서 감정적으로 변해 날뛰다가 로켓포를 맞고 전사할 뻔한 병사를 본 적이 있다. 아마 안드로이드 병사가 그 로켓포를 대신 맞고 후폭풍까지 감당하지 않았으면 필시 그 병사는 2계급 특진했을 것이다. 굳이 얼굴을 만들어서는 애착을 가지게 하고 분노하게 하는 이유를 알 수가 없다.
상층부의 친척이 안드로이드의 얼굴 파츠를 생산하는 기업을 운영하고 있는 건가? 그럼 어느 정도 말이 될지도 모르겠다. 방산비리란 어느 시대이든 어느 나라이든 존재하기 마련이니까. 하지만 그것도 이렇게 눈에 띄게 해먹는다면 문제가 분명 발생할 것이다. 그걸 수십년간 이렇게 해먹을 수 있다니. 글쎄.
말이 길었다. 그래, 이렇게 길게, 멍하니, 전장에서, 이런 생각이나 지껄였던 이유.

언젠가 나는 전장에서 무사히 살아남아 자신을 측근에서 지키던 안드로이드 병사까지 같이 데리고 전역한 미친놈을 본 적이 있었다. 당연히 군역을 지던 그 기간동안 받은 모든 봉급과 위험수당 등을 모두 탈탈 털어넣은 뒤에 가능한 일이었다. 그러고도 좋다는 듯 행복한 듯 웃는 모습을 보며 난 절대로 이해하지 못하리라 생각한 적이 있었다.
그래, 난 이제 그 미친 놈과 같은 분류에 속하게 된 것 같다.
이것을 비극이라고 해야 할지, 희극이라고 해야 할지. 나에게 익숙하지 않은 이 맛에, 정신을 차릴 수가 없다. 역시 비극은 익숙한 맛이어야 한다. 희극도 마찬가지.
